Tsk, I finished colouring those in weeeeeks ago..!

My mum has a full set of first editions of all the Famous Fives. They'd be worth a fortune if she hadn't drawn long hair and cleavage on all the pictures of the boys. Perverted woman (well, girl).

It's the holidays and it's been sunny so I've been fair ploughing through the best the charity shops have to offer. The man bought me Lyrics Alley by Leila Aboulela, a Sudanese writer, for my birthday and it's very good.

After that, I've run out so I'd best get some more reading material in or I'll have to read the Betterware catalogue again.

I know it might surprise some, but in recent weeks I have been reaffirming my faith (RC) so was dipping into The Bible. Very interesting, from a philosophical - rather than religious - point of view.

On a day-to-day basis, I am reading "A Few Kind Words and a Loaded Gun" by Noel Smith, an autobiographical account of life as a career criminal. I don't tend to like crime novels (too much of a Busman's Holiday for me) but I met Mr. Smith a couple of years ago, when he was working as a writer for "Inside Times", the national newspaper for prisons. Although he is a reformed man he is honestly unapologetic about his past; the book is funny and eloquent (not bad, considering the author's poor reducation as a child). He wrote the book while still serving in prison, and I will be reading the follow-up "A Rusty Gun" about his adjustment to modern life following years inside, with interest.

Additionally I am re-reading "Designated Targets" the second in the alternate history trilogy "Axis of Time" by John Birmingham, about how an experimental accident in the 21st century transports several modern warships back to the Battle of Midway in 1941, thus throwing the historical timeline out of whack. Too detailed to explain here but I cannot recommend it enough.

Apart from OU coursework (Module K116, if anyone's interested) I have a couple of books on the go:

* "Dublin 1916: The Siege of the GPO" by Prof. Clair Wills

* "Creed" by James Herbert (re-reading for the first time in many years)

* His Dark Materials: The Amber Spyglass" by Philip Pullman

:)

Yep. I'm in my second year of a part-time BA(Hons) in Youth Justice Studies. The first module (K115) was all theory; K116 has aspects of a practical nature which is fine if you already work in a YOT/LASCH but I don't so I have to gain my experience through voluntary work-based placement. Not easy as the module requires at least 6 hours contact with young people in trouble per week (in my case, in between my 'normal' job and other voluntary/domestic duties).

I'm having everything Caitlin Moran ever wrote read to me like payback for Paddington Bear and The Faraway Tree.
