Just read this Sounds Like London: 100 Years of Black Music in the Capital by Lloyd Bradley who also wrote the hugely enjoyable and informative Bass Culture.

This book talks about everything from the first band coming over in the 20s Calypso artists on the Windrush, Sound systems like SoulIISoul and Good Time right through dubstep and grime ( which very much recreates the DIY attitude of the sound men)

my only criticism is it jumps around a bit chronologically but I still enjoyed it.
I remember when this was all fields and Zuckerberg was still in pre school
